What am I buying?

Digital pattern only. Yarn, needles, stuffing and ribbon are not included.

What do I need?

4-ply/fingering: 13 g / 47 m wool and 3.25 mm (US 3) needles. 8-ply/DK: 29 g / 58 m wool and 4 mm (US 6) needles.

Also: 6 stitch markers, 2 small cable needles (or 2 extra larger markers), tapestry needle, at least 40 cm waste yarn, stuffing and approximately 20 cm ribbon no wider than 5 mm. See the full materials and gauge guide below.

How will I receive it?

After payment, your pattern is available to download on the confirmation page. Your download link is also sent to your email.

Is this my skill level?

Intermediate. A satisfying project if you enjoy knitting in the round and working textured stitches. You’ll use magic loop or DPNs, cables, twisted stitches, centred double decreases, bobbles and picking up held stitches.

New to Judy’s Magic Cast-On? The PDF includes written steps and photos to guide you through it.

Finished size & gauge

The designer does not state a finished diameter. Size varies with yarn, needles and tension: 4-ply makes a smaller ornament; DK makes a larger one.

Pattern gauge over 10 cm / 4 in in stocking stitch: 4-ply: 30 stitches × 37 rows; DK: 22 stitches × 20 rows.

The part of Christmas you made yourself

“You knitted that?”

That’s the lovely part: this little ornament holds more than stuffing. It holds the colour you chose, the stitches you worked, and the pleasure of hanging up something made by your own hands.

Keep one for your tree, or give one to someone who’ll love knowing you made it for them.

A step-by-step photo guide introduces Judy’s Magic Cast-On. Further photos show how to hold and pick up stitches, add the ribbon, stuff the points and close the centre.

Cables, twisted stitches and bobbles create the snowflake’s raised detail. Working both sides gives your ornament its dimensional shape, ready for a ribbon and a place on the tree.

Your materials checklist

Give those treasured yarn leftovers a purpose.

Before you cast on

A few things you might be wondering

Check the techniques, choose your yarn, and know exactly what’s in your download. If you have a question before buying, get in touch.

Ask us a question
Is this a finished snowflake or a kit?

Neither. You’re buying the digital knitting pattern so you can make your own snowflakes. Yarn, needles and finished items are not included.

Is this knitting or crochet?

This is a knitting pattern, worked with knitting needles.

Is it suitable for beginners?

This is an Intermediate pattern, best suited to knitters comfortable working in the round. You’ll use cables, twisted stitches, bobbles, decreases and picked-up stitches. Judy’s Magic Cast-On is explained with written steps and photos.

Does it include photos, charts or videos?

The 14-page English PDF includes written directions, charts and step-by-step photos. A video course is not included.

How long does one snowflake take?

Making time varies with your experience, chosen yarn and familiarity with the techniques. The designer does not provide a completion-time estimate. If you’re making it for a gift, allow time for the cast-on, both knitted sides and finishing.

Can I use leftover yarn?

Yes. The pattern uses just 13 g / 47 m of 4-ply wool or 29 g / 58 m of DK wool. Other yarns can work with corresponding needles; finished size and yarn usage will vary.

How big will my snowflake be?

No finished diameter is specified in the PDF. The 4-ply version uses 3.25 mm needles and the DK version uses 4 mm needles. Finer yarn creates a smaller ornament, and thicker yarn a larger one. See the materials section for both gauges.
