What is inside the pattern?

English knitting instructions for a one-size cable poncho. The design includes cable charts, written pattern directions and a schematic.

The construction uses two flat pieces, short-row shoulder shaping, a three-needle bind-off and picked-up collar and side bands.

Is this the right project for me?

Intermediate. Work cables, follow a chart, shape shoulders with short rows, join with a three-needle bind-off, pick up stitches and make buttonholes.

The front and back are worked back and forth. The collar is picked up and worked in the round; the side bands are added at the end.

Finished size & fit

One generous size. Finished bust circumference: approximately 212 cm (83.5 in). Finished length: approximately 72 cm (28.25 in).

These are finished poncho measurements, not the intended wearer’s body measurements. Compare the width and length with how you want the piece to drape over your clothes.

Materials you will need

DK/8-ply yarn: approximately 1,898 m (2,076 yd). The sample uses 100% wool around 260 m per 100 g; compare yardage and gauge when substituting.

3.5 mm circular needle, 120 cm long, for working the flat pieces; 4 mm circular needle, 60 cm long, for the collar. Adjust sizes to obtain gauge.

Four buttons approximately 20 mm wide, stitch markers, stitch holders, a cable needle and a yarn needle.

Cable Poncho Knitting Pattern

A generous silhouette with a defined shoulder

The ornamental cables run across the wide shoulder sections while the middle remains plain. That contrast gives the poncho detail without covering the entire fabric in cable work.

Button the side bands for a more contained shape or leave them open over a layer you want to show.

The shaping and finishing are part of the project

Knit the two pieces flat, using short rows to shape the shoulders and neck. Join the shoulders with a three-needle bind-off, then pick up the collar and side bands.

Each side band has two buttonholes. Allow time for the cable panels, the joins and the picked-up edges as well as the plain knitting.

What does one size mean here?

The finished poncho is approximately 212 cm around the bust and 72 cm long. Its generous drape is part of the design. Check those finished dimensions against the fit you want rather than treating one size as a promise that it suits everyone.

Is it knitted entirely in the round?

No. The two main pieces are knitted back and forth. The shoulders are shaped and joined, then stitches are picked up for the collar and side bands. The collar is worked in the round.
